A fascinating book of
3-D Photographs
Legend has it that Harold Lloyd shot hundreds of thousands of stereo slides starting with the introduction of the Stereo Realist in the 1940's. Lucky for us he used his 3-D camera to take pictures of his friends and neighbors - among them Bob Hope, Gary Cooper, Jayne Mansfield, Richard Burton, Carol Lynley, Dick Powell, Roy Rogers & Trigger, a young Candice Bergen, Bogart & Bacall, Nixon, Eisenhower, Gen. MacArthur and many others. Among these photos are more than a dozen striking unpublished pictures of Marilyn Monroe. 67 of the best of Lloyd's photos are reproduced in this book in full-color 3-D - printed in a side-by-side format that is viewed with the included hand-held plastic stereo viewer. Each half of the stereo pair is a large 3 5/8" wide, making them a pleasure to view in 2-D or 3-D! This book isn't perfect. Seven of the stereos are printed in pseudostereo (right and left images are transposed, and are viewable with the cross-eyed freeview method), and some fall into the snapshot category. Paul Wing said, "This is a book that many serious 3-D enthusiasts will want to own in spite of the shortcomings." Stereo World Editor John Dennis wrote, "Fortunately, most of the interesting stereo gems in the book (and there are many) are presented correctly with good attention to vertical alignment, rotation, window, etc." We agree with both, and are thankful that we can all share the glamour and depth of a bygone era. The book is 10" x 10", Hardcover only, with 96 pages and 70 photographs (67 in 3-D) |
